The uses of deep drawn molybdenum foil

Deep drawing with molybdenum foil (thickness 0.03 - 0.2 mm, annealed tensile strength ≥ 20%) with low expansion (4.8×10-6/℃) and a melting point of 2620 ℃ has become the preferred material for "micron-level precision parts" in high-end electronics, aerospace, medical and other fields. The key advantage of the molybdenum foil is that it can remain undamaged even under deep drawing ratios of H/D > 1.5, while maintaining dimensional stability.

In the fields of electronics and semiconductors, molybdenum foil is deep-pressed into microwave tube cavities, wave-shaped heat dissipation shells for magnetron tubes, and power amplifier casings. The thermal expansion is matched with Al₂O₃ ceramics to reduce thermal stress. After being surface-coated with 2-5 µm of nickel, it can directly replace copper alloys and be used as the high-temperature welding lead frame for silicon carbide modules.

Aerospace and military industries utilize their high-temperature resistance and hydrogen embrittlement resistance: 0.1 mm molybdenum foil sheets are deep-rolled and then annealed at 1200 ℃ to produce sealing gaskets and injector swirl plates for rocket engine liquid oxygen/kerosene; the gate of the satellite ion thruster requires deep-rolling hole position tolerances of <±10 µm and Ra < 0.1 µm to ensure precise plasma ejection.

The fields of new energy and medical applications are expanding rapidly: In solid-state batteries, 3D micro-pores (50 - 100 µm) deep-drawn molybdenum current collectors inhibit lithium dendrites; for fuel cell bipolar plates, Mo-0.5Ti alloy foil deep-drawn 0.2 - 0.5 mm flow field grooves balance acid resistance and ductility; for radiotherapy leaves and degradable vascular stent substrates, their high-density shielding of X-rays and biological inertness enable ±5 µm forming accuracy and controllable degradation.
