Molybdenum foil and tungsten foil

Molybdenum foil has long been the mainstream in semiconductor heat dissipation substrates, photovoltaic back electrodes, and aerospace insulation layers due to its high melting point of 2620 °C, thermal conductivity of 138 W/m·K, and low thermal expansion coefficient of 5.0×10-6/K. However, tungsten foil, with a higher melting point of 3422 °C and a thermal conductivity of 173 W/m·K, is now entering the ultra-high temperature scenarios such as rocket nozzles where temperatures exceed 2000 °C. Graphene, with its extremely high thermal conductivity of >5000 W/m·K and the advantage of being a single atomic layer and lightweight, has demonstrated the potential to revolutionize traditional metal foils in the laboratory. Although tungsten foil has high brittleness and it is difficult to uniformly prepare large areas of graphene with high cost, both of them form an "up-and-down squeeze" on molybdenum foil at the performance limit.

In the field of power semiconductors, molybdenum foil remains the preferred choice for the heat dissipation substrates of IGBTs and LEDs. However, with the growing demand for SiC/GaN high-power devices, graphene is still awaiting mass production and breakthroughs in bonding technology. In the process of "silver removal" in photovoltaics, the back electrodes of molybdenum foil have already replaced silver paste first. Graphene transparent conductive films and tungsten-copper composite foils are still constrained by durability and process complexity. In the aerospace and nuclear industries, molybdenum foil is indispensable in combustion chambers above 2000 °C. Carbon fiber composites offer lightweight solutions to traditional metal schemes, while molybdenum foil still has cost-effectiveness in the 1200 - 2000 °C range. In the short term, the mid-range market position of molybdenum foil is stable; in the long term, once graphene achieves mass production breakthroughs, the high-end thermal management market may be reshaped.
