The application of molybdenum targets in medical treatment
Molybdenum targets, with their unique physical properties, have become core materials in the field of medical imaging. Its atomic number is moderate and it can generate low-energy X-rays ranging from 17 to 30 keV, playing a key role in mammography. It can not only clearly distinguish the tiny calcification foci and tumors in breast tissue, but also reduce radiation damage to healthy tissues. After optimizing the energy spectrum with rhodium and silver filters, high-resolution imaging can be achieved, facilitating early breast cancer screening. It is internationally recognized as the "gold standard" for the early diagnosis of breast cancer. In addition, the low-energy X-rays produced by molybdenum targets are also applicable to small animal imaging, micro-CT and dental X-ray equipment, meeting the fine imaging requirements of different scenarios.
In the field of radiotherapy, molybdenum targets have also demonstrated significant value. Technetium-99m, produced by the decay of molybdenum-99, an isotope of molybdenum, is a commonly used radioactive tracer in nuclear medicine and can be used for tumor localization and therapeutic effect evaluation. Molybdenum target X-ray sources can also provide precise dose calibration and imaging verification for radiotherapy equipment, ensuring the accuracy and safety of radiotherapy.
From the perspective of material properties, the high melting point (2620°C) and high thermal conductivity of the molybdenum target enable it to withstand electron beam bombardment and dissipate heat rapidly, ensuring the long-term stable operation of the equipment. Compared with traditional tungsten targets, the specific energy spectra optimized for soft tissue imaging of molybdenum targets (approximately 17.5 keV for the Kα line and approximately 19.6 keV for the Kβ line) significantly improve the imaging contrast of low-density tissues. With the application of dual-target combination technology and digital mammography technology, its imaging adaptability and diagnostic efficiency have been further improved, occupying an irreplaceable position in medical diagnosis and treatment.
