Molybdenum is a transition element with a chemical symbol of Mo. It has the characteristics of higher melting point, higher density (10.23g/cm3), better thermal conductivity, lower thermal expansion coefficient and resistivity, etc. Therefore, it is widely used in iron and steel industry, mold industry, automobile spraying and other industries. So, what is the difference between TZM alloy and pure molybdenum? Let's compare and contrast.

TZM alloy, also known as molybdenum zirconium titanium alloy or titanium zirconium molybdenum alloy, is a kind of high temperature alloy commonly used in molybdenum base alloy, the composition of 0.50% titanium, 0.08% zirconium, the rest of 0.02% carbon molybdenum alloy, commonly used preparation methods are: arc melting, casting method and powder metallurgy technology.

Pure molybdenum (MO1), molybdenum content is more than 99.95%, mainly used in the high temperature environment with strict purity requirements, but due to the existence of low recrystallization temperature, poor processing performance, brittleness and low strength of its shortcomings, so that it is limited in practical application.

Molybdenum zirconium titanium alloy, density of 10.22g/cm3, melting point 2617℃, boiling point 4612℃.Mo1 has a density of 10.29g/cm3, a melting point of 2610℃ and a boiling point of 5560℃.

In addition, relative to Mo1, molybdenum, zirconium titanium alloy has a higher recrystallization temperature and room temperature and high temperature strength, this is mainly because of a small amount of fine dispersion particle additives to prevent the molybdenum grain growth in high temperature conditions, thus greatly improve the alloy's recrystallization temperature, the mechanical properties at room temperature and high temperature are improved greatly. The initial and final recrystallization temperatures of molybdenum zirconium titanium alloy are 500℃ and 450℃ higher than those of pure molybdenum, respectively.

Molybdenum zirconium titanium alloy can be used in the manufacture of torpedo engine valve body, rocket nozzle, radiation cover, electron tube cathode and so on. Pure molybdenum wire is generally used in high temperature furnace and EDM and wire cutting processing; Molybdenum sheets are used to make radios and X-ray equipment. Molybdenum crucible is mainly used in the manufacture of gun inner bore and rocket nozzle.
