Molybdenum improves corrosion resistance and high temperature strength

The corrosion resistance of stainless steel is improved (with reference to the common stainless steel grade and corrosion resistance). The stainless steel containing stainless steel has better corrosion resistance compared with stainless steel containing no sulfur, and is often used in a more corrosive environment, such as chemical equipment or marine use. Stainless steel has a number of grades, and the content of iron (and chromium, nickel, nitrogen, etc.) is different. The best stainless steel grade shall be selected according to the corrosivity of the specific application environment.

Molybdenum as a large atom, can improve the high temperature strength of stainless steel by solution strengthening. Heat exchangers and other high-temperature equipment such as automotive exhaust systems take advantage of this effect.

Molybdenum is an element of ferrite formation. This means that when molybdenum is added to austenitic stainless steel to improve corrosion resistance, austenite forming elements such as nickel or nitrogen must also be added in order to maintain austenite structure. The metallographic structure of duplex stainless steel is a mixed crystal structure of austenite and ferrite, so they are "two-phase" structure. This is achieved by adding less nickel (less nickel than is required to form all austenitic stainless steel).
